Flexible packaging is the film-and-fabric side of the trade: pouches and sachets, laminate and stretch rolls, PE bags and liners, and woven polypropylene fabric. What the group shares is that the material arrives as a roll or a bag rather than a formed box, so the specification is about structure rather than shape — how many layers, how many microns or GSM, what barrier the product needs, and how the pack will be filled and sealed. The same converter frequently runs more than one of these: pouches and the laminate they are made from, or woven fabric and the sacks cut from it. An RFQ that describes the whole requirement tends to reach those factories once and come back with quotes that can be set side by side.

What is bought together, and why it changes the specification
The most common pairing is finished pouches with laminate rolls, and the choice between them is about the buyer's own line, not the product. A brand packing on a form-fill-seal machine buys laminate in reels and needs to state reel width, core size and repeat length; a brand hand-filling buys pre-made pouches and states format, fill volume and closure instead. The laminate structure — the layers, and whether one of them is metallised or foil — is the same decision in both cases, so it should be made once and carried into both quotes. The second pairing is liners with the bag they sit inside: a PE liner of 20 to 70 microns, in LDPE or HDPE, inside a woven PP sack or a bulk bag, specified together so the liner actually fits the gusset. The third is woven PP fabric bought as rolls for conversion, where the spec sheet's own guidance is 60 to 80 GSM for bag conversion, in widths up to four metres.
What moves the price across the group
Structure first. A two-layer clear laminate and a three-layer laminate with a barrier layer are different products at different prices, and the barrier decision should be driven by the shelf life the product needs, not by habit. Thickness second: rolls run 12 to 30 microns and PE bags 20 to 70, and every micron is material. Print third, and this is the one buyers underestimate — rotogravure, which is how pouches and laminates are printed, needs an engraved cylinder per colour per design. That is a one-time cost that makes the first order expensive and repeat orders cheaper, which is why the RFQ form asks whether cylinders already exist. Quantity last: minimum orders differ sharply across the group — 50 rolls, 3,000 pouches, 5,000 PE bags, 1,000 metres of fabric on the standard sheets — and a quote that looks high may simply be for a quantity below a converter's economic minimum.
What buyers get wrong
Asking for a pouch without stating what goes in it. Fill weight and product form — powder, granule, liquid — decide seal type, gusset, and whether a spout, valve or zipper is even possible, and a supplier quoting without them is guessing. Writing 'food grade' without saying which standard or whether a migration test report is required; the form has separate fields for both because they are separate questions. Leaving out the empty-pouch weight and its tolerance, which is what per-unit cost is actually built on. And, for reel buyers, omitting core diameter and reel width, which are machine facts the supplier cannot infer and which turn a usable quote into a re-quote.

Should I buy laminate rolls or finished pouches?
It depends on your filling line, not your product. Rolls suit a form-fill-seal machine and need reel width, core size and repeat length specified. Pre-made pouches suit manual or semi-automatic filling and need format, fill volume and closure specified instead. The laminate structure is the same decision either way.
What does 'barrier' mean on a flexible packaging quote?
Which of moisture, oxygen and light the laminate is built to keep out, and to what degree. A metallised or foil layer adds barrier and cost. The right level follows from the product's shelf life, which is why the RFQ form asks for shelf life alongside the barrier fields.
Why do minimum order quantities vary so much within flexible packaging?
Because the economics differ by process. Standard sheets carry minimums of 50 rolls, 3,000 pouches, 5,000 PE bags and 1,000 metres of woven fabric. Printed work also carries cylinder costs that only amortise over volume.
Can one supplier quote pouches, liners and woven fabric together?
Often the pouch and laminate come from the same converter, and woven fabric and woven bags from the same mill. Liners are usually a separate PE line. One RFQ covering all of them reaches each factory once and lets you compare the group as a single decision.
